Soccer is more than just a game.

As I watched the 2022 World Cup with international friends, a variety of scenes flooded my imagination. I recalled living in soccer mad Peru when they made the World Cup in 2018. Their joyful pride and intense love for team and country was on full display. Recently, I would witness the same emotions when the US made the cut.
A Moroccan friend, a former soccer player himself, was ecstatic when his country of birth finished number four in the world, and expressed the pride and hope that young children from Morocco would feel for the future.
In contrast, when I was middle-school, I played on one of the worst teams ever. Although we were beaten by kids who had started practicing at three-years old, we played through rain and snow, and we never quit. Soccer (Futbol) is truly an international sport. It is played in all corners of the world, by children and adults alike. It is a game of skill, determination, and hard work, and is one that evokes pride and love when "your team" makes it onto the international stage.
